i think it was the rule because of course u2 nation went psycho when u2 were on it promoting the last album. SELL OUTS! lip sync sellouts. i heard bono (and liam, too) can't even sing. for real. everything they ever did was really sung in the studio by chris martin and then on-stage they went out and lip synched. like milli vanilli.... ;)
Pretty much always lip synched for as long as I can remember, with a few exceptions. In about 1998 they introduced a live singing only policy to try and freshen it up, but this didnt last long as the 'manufactured' bands couldnt/wouldnt appear.
